DJ NYK and the Sound of Bollywood After Dark

There is a particular skill in making a familiar song feel new again.

For DJ NYK — Nikhil Sahni — that idea has been central to his work for more than two decades. His career has moved between DJing, music production, Bollywood remixes, radio, visual performance, education and independent music, but the thread connecting it all has remained the same: finding new ways to make people experience music.

What began with music-making and DJing eventually developed into one of the more recognisable careers in India’s Bollywood and electronic music space. From DJ Sets to a Distinct Sound

DJ NYK’s relationship with music started early. In an interview with The New Indian Express, he recalled receiving a synthesizer from his father and developing a serious interest in becoming a musician. DJing initially came through performances at private parties, eventually becoming a professional path of its own. The New Indian Express

But his approach was never limited to simply playing records.

His work developed around the intersection of Bollywood and electronic dance music, bringing recognisable Indian melodies into contemporary club-oriented arrangements. That became an important part of his identity as a DJ and producer, particularly as electronic music continued to find a larger audience in India.

The result was a sound that could move between nostalgia and modern dance music without treating either as an afterthought.

The Bollywood Remix Chapter

Bollywood became a defining part of the DJ NYK story.

His official remix work began with Billu Barber and expanded across films including Jab We Met, Dil Chahta Hai, Ra.One, Golmaal 3, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Kabir Singh, Animal and Zara Hatke Zara Bachke. His official website currently lists remix credits across 30 Bollywood films. (

In a 2014 interview, he explained that a successful remix requires retaining the character of the original while rebuilding much of its musical framework — a process involving arrangement, programming, engineering and production. The New Indian Express

That distinction is important to understanding his career. The objective was not only to make Bollywood songs work in clubs, but to reinterpret them for a different listening environment.

One example is his remix of “Aey Khuda” from Paathshaala, which his official biography states remained at No. 1 on the charts for 21 weeks. His remix of “Chammak Challo” from  was also featured in the official PlayStation 3 game associated with the film. DJ NYK Building a World Around the Music

As DJ NYK's profile grew, the work expanded beyond individual performances.

The Electronyk Podcast, launched in 2009, became a recurring platform for dance music and Bollywood selections. Over time, it evolved into formats includi-ng Party Mix and Bollywood Sunset Mix, allowing the project to move from a traditional podcast format towards a broader audio-visual experience.

The idea behind Bollywood Sunset is particularly interesting because it moves away from the conventional image of a DJ set built entirely around peak-time energy. The mixes lean into deeper and more melodic electronic sounds, with Bollywood elements placed within a more atmospheric setting. The concept has also developed into Bollywood Sunset Live, an invite-only live experience designed around scenic locations and the sound of the series.

It is another example of how NYK has approached DJing as more than a performance slot — as a format that can have its own identity, mood and visual language.

When the DJ Set Becomes a Visual Experience

DJ NYK's interest in technology and performance has also shaped his approach to live shows.

His official biography credits him with introducing the concept of video DJing, or DVJ, in India, and his Electronyk Show brings together music, synchronized lighting, visuals and stage production in an arena-scale format.

That evolution reflects a wider change in electronic performance itself.

The modern DJ is no longer restricted to what happens through the speakers. Lighting, screens, visual programming and production design can become part of the performance language. For an artist who has consistently worked between music and technology, this creates another layer through which a set can be experienced.

From Performer to Educator

Another significant part of the DJ NYK ecosystem exists away from the stage.

Founded in 2011, Electronyk Academy was created as a platform for DJing and electronic music production, offering learning opportunities for aspiring DJs, producers and music enthusiasts.This adds a different dimension to NYK's career.

The same journey that took him from experimenting with music to performing internationally has also become something he can pass on to emerging artists. His work in education reflects an understanding that a music scene grows not only through established performers, but through the people learning how to create the next generation of sound.

The same philosophy extends to Play Life Records and the wider Play Life project, which have been used to support and showcase electronic music talent from India.

NYK's work has evolved alongside that shift.From early remixes and radio appearances to Electronyk, Play Life, audiovisual performances and Bollywood Sunset, each chapter has expanded the idea of what a DJ-led music property can become.

That may ultimately be the most interesting part of his career.

The story is not simply about how a DJ became successful. It is about what happens when a performer keeps looking beyond the conventional boundaries of the role — into production, technology, education, curation and experience.

For DJ NYK, the console was never the destination.

It was the starting point.
